In the late 90's I started NSTRA Trialing, and became serious about breeding pointers. I started to see the "Big Picture" and began the process of producing the "Perfect" dog that has it all. The natural instinct to point, back and retrieve, all with style. A big nose, a no-quit motor, ability to hunt to the front and still check in, would be on my list for the "Perfect" dog. One that wins at my game, but also loves to hunt with my buddies!
Crow's Little Joe impressed me, with his many accomplishments. A 25XCH NSTRA, it was clear he had a huge nose, uncanny bird-finding ability, and was able to win in any venue, under all weather conditions. Naturally, I wanted to get his qualities in my line of pointers. When I looked at the "Big Picture", and where all that ability came from, I went back a couple of generations to Branscum Nickle, a Champion in his own right. His Bloodline was influenced by Great Champions like 9XCH Copper Nickle, 14XCH Southern Doctor and National Champion Slate Creek Doc, among others.
Some of those great dogs came from crossing Branscum Nickle with Pike's Creek Mike, and I would like to thank Mike Branscum and Keith Foreman for letting me in on those two great lines of breeding for the advancement of my program. I will build on the foundation of those two lines and better my line of breeding by bringing back those solid, respectable lines from pointing dog history.
Part Two!! I've had my Nickle and Pike's Creek Mike Pups a while now, and couldn't be more pleased with their progress!! This cross will really work well! My Nickle dogs are smart, super easy to break out, and they love people. They are calm in the kennel, easy to handle in the field, and are probably the most biddable dogs I have ever handled. They are showing very good noses and plenty of style. I'm proud of the fact that my "Snap" pup and a litter mate have both had placements in NSTRA Trialing before the age of two! My Pike's Creek Mike Pups are a totally different animal! These pups are super-speedy, tough, and bird CRAZY!! When they hit the ground, they are spinning out of their shoes to get to the field and find birds!! When they hit scent, they slam their point with intensity, and are high on both ends. I'm very excited to get these dogs to NSTRA Trials. They are going to be fun to run!!
I see lots of good things ahead with these two lines of dogs! I feel very confident about the direction I am taking with them, and hopefully, will someday have my own "Crow's Little Joe". Thanks for listening!
